A lawsuit has been filed against tech giant Nvidia alleging that a former employee stole trade secrets from his previous employer, car technology firm Valeo.

The lawsuit claims that Mohammad Moniruzzaman, a senior staff member at Nvidia, copied gigabytes of data from Valeo in 2021 while he was working for the German arm of the French firm. He left to join Nvidia later that year.

Moniruzzaman's alleged theft came to light in March 2022 when he was giving an online presentation to a team from Valeo. During the presentation, he accidentally displayed a file containing Valeo's proprietary software code.

Valeo claims that it immediately took screenshots of the file and alerted the German police. Moniruzzaman was subsequently convicted of unlawfully holding the data and fined €14,400 ($15,724).

The lawsuit alleges that Nvidia has benefited financially from Moniruzzaman's stolen trade secrets. It is seeking significant damages and wants the court to make an injunction prohibiting Nvidia and its affiliates from using Valeo's code.

Nvidia has denied the allegations and has said that it is cooperating with Valeo's investigation.

This lawsuit is a reminder of the importance of taking steps to protect trade secrets, such as training employees on how to identify and protect sensitive information. It is also important to have clear policies and procedures in place for handling confidential data.
